Four Tuesdays: April 11, 18, 25 and May 2 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET Online
Author and editor Sol Stein calls the process of creating a character "competing with God." That's quite a tall order, but with the right tools, you can make your characters come to life with true emotional depth and range. In this workshop for beginner and intermediate writers, you'll receive plenty of prompts and exercises that will help you populate the world of your stories with compelling, memorable characters.
During the first of four sessions, the instructor will discuss what makes a strong character by using examples from published works, as well as review exercises for writing believable, captivating characters. Each class, the students will participate in mini workshops where everyone will first read the submitted works at home and then provide both written and verbal feedback to each writer. In addition, we’ll read and discuss a variety of short fiction to gather inspiration and ideas for our own writing from a variety of brilliant authors in the most recent Best American Short Stories anthology.
This class is great for beginners who are looking for some ideas to get started as well as intermediate writers who want to sharpen and focus their skills or continue working on an existing project.
