Though their terrors might seem mild to a 21st century audience, the Gothic novels of the late 18th century created emotional and physical reactions in their contemporary readers that we might associate with a horror film or a Stephen King novel. These stories explored the dark underside of Western civilization by setting it in a medieval, European past where haunted castles, evil magicians, and literal demons threatened innocent heroines. In spite of, or perhaps because of, their popularity, these novels were often seen as a threat to their readers, especially impressionable young women. In this seminar-style, discussion based class, we’ll read the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764), by Horace Walpole; The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794) by the queen of Gothic fiction, Ann Radcliffe; and a novel so Gothic it's almost a parody of itself, The Monk (1796) by Matthew Lewis. Five Thursdays: January 21, 28, February 4, 11, 18, from noon to 2 p.m. Online Class.
