In the five chapters of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Joyce traces the slow growth of a soul in five stages and its many aspirations and disappointments. Joyce’s partly autobiographical protagonist is Stephen Dedalus (or should his name be “Icarus”?)

“I will not serve that in which I no longer believe whether it call itself my home, my fatherland or my church,” Stephen says at the end of Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.  This 20-year-old would-be artist feels in conflict with his family, Ireland, the British Empire, and the Catholic Church. Out of these conflicts he makes a declaration of independence to find a truer identity and to “forge” it if necessary.  By flying from the nets of these conflicting claims, he hopes to “discover the mode of life or of art whereby your spirit could express itself in unfettered freedom.”

Some characters in Portrait reappear in Ulysses, perhaps the seminal novel of the 20th century.  If you are ever going to read Ulysses in this lifetime, you might find it useful to first know Joyce’s easier prequel, Portrait of the Artist. Four Fridays: June 7, 14, 21, 28, 2019, 6-8 pm
