Since the publication of Mohsin Hamid's The Reluctant Fundamentalist in 2007, which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, a recent crop of Pakistan writers have been earning critical acclaim at home and around the world.  In this course, we will explore contemporary Pakistani fiction and examine how these narratives about religious fundamentalism, terrorism, class distinctions, political corruption, and love give us a compelling glimpse into the relatively young country that was carved out of a crumbling British Indian Empire in 1947. Our readings include: a Pakistani Princeton graduate’s account of his post-9/11 experiences (Mohsin Hamid’s A Reluctant Fundamentalist), a collection of short stories about an extended landowning family from Punjab (Daniyal Mueenuddin’s In Other Rooms, Other Wonders), and a dark comedy about a dictator who encouraged jihad (Mohammed Hanif’s A Case of Exploding Mangoes).
