Join us this fall as we read and consider two American poets who capture the social and political unrest of the age. As our country grapples with ethics, morality and shifting norms, Tracy K. Smith (Wade in the Water) and Terrance Hayes(American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin) employ poetic forms in fresh and occasionally startling ways to help us reimagine our political and moral landscape.

Tracy K. Smith, our current Poet Laureate and a winner of the Pulitzer Prize, uses ellipsis and documentary quotes to explore topics as varied as African American slaves and soldiers during the Civil War, corporate predation and the emotional challenges of motherhood. Lest you think this sounds like opening the newspaper, Tracy K. Smith lures you in with gorgeous imagery and compelling questions about the role art and about what Charles Simic calls her “private mischief.”  This is an engaging collection of poems that is not afraid to ask big questions.

Terrance Hayes, winner of the National Book Award and until recently the poetry editor of the New York Times Magazine, has long excelled in poetic form. Written in the first 200 days of the Trump administration, every sonnet in this book shares the same title and riffs on the current political and social climate. These poems feel absolutely up to the minute but not ephemeral, and they succeed in reimagining the sonnet as a megaphone for contemporary culture.

Our class meets from 3:00—4:30 pm on November 6, 13, 27 and December 4, 11, 18.
