Delve into a novel that Justin Torres praised, in his New York Times review, for being "brilliant in the way it pays attention not to what our thoughts make us feel, but to what our feelings make us think." Largely set in Connecticut during the 1990s, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous follows the journey of Little Dog and his mother, Ma, who have immigrated from Vietnam along with grandmother Lan. Lan is dying of cancer; Ma works in a nail salon; Little Dog navigates his way toward independence, by taking a summer job on a tobacco farm outside Hartford, and his first love affair. We’ll consider the book’s unusual structural decisions, drawing on traditions of epistolary writing and kishōtenketsu narratives, as well as the ways Vuong’s considerable skills as a poet shape his handling of image and scene. Advance reading of the book is recommended. Sunday, September 22, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
