Denis Johnson’s Mastery of the Short Form (1809)

Tuesday, January 30, 7 to 9 p.m.

$45 (10% off for members)

With the posthumous publication in January 2018 of his final short story collection, The Largesse of the Sea Maiden, Denis Johnson’s legacy of a literature born of his superb sense of craft and deep humanity is secured. This definitive exploration of his enduring themes—the inescapable allure of self-annihilation, and the paradox of seeking connection and meaning in an indifferent world—extends his achingly funny and stunningly deft, unsentimental, breathtakingly original style, but moves beyond the standard for “transgressive” fiction that he set in the 1992 collection, Jesus’ Son, and speaks with a knowing authority about the greatest story of all: how we die after we try to live.

*If you enjoy this class, let us know! We are tentatively planning a deeper dive into Johnson’s work for the spring. Also, the store is hosting A Tribute to Denis Johnson at 6 p.m. on Saturday, January 20. For more details, click here.
