Over the course of two classes, we will explore Kudos, the final book in Rachel Cusk’s acclaimed Outline trilogy (preceded by Outline from 2015 and Transit from 2016). In Kudos, we find the culmination of Faye’s grappling with life’s “dissolutions and reconstructions,” which she has explored with increasing intensity and consequence throughout these novels. As Faye (the voice in autofiction mode for the author herself) reinvents the art of writing amidst the reconstruction of a life and a home that the many dissolutions of divorce require, we join her in navigating the messy aftermath wrought by damaged, damaging families and the menacing limitations confronted in the world. Listening to the stories of others’ lives, which abound on every page, Faye comes to tell her own, seeking connections and continuity in intimate human relationships, whether parent and child, spouse to spouse, or artist to audience.

If you have not attended the previous classes on Outline and Transit, you are still entirely welcome to join this class. Two Thursday afternoons, January 17 and 31, 1:00-3:00 p.m. Note: Last class has been rescheduled to Jan. 31.
