This seminar-style class will offer a guided introduction to the varied work of Octavia Butler who published award-winning science fiction novels and short stories from the 1970s until her death in 2006. In the first class we’ll discuss Kindred (1979), a novel that combines a unique time travel mechanism with historical realism to explore racism in the 1970s and the antebellum South. For the second meeting we’ll read Wild Seed (1980), the first of the five Patternist books which reveals a secret, speculative history of the world. Finally, we’ll end with a discussion of Parable of the Sower (1993), the first book in a post-apocalyptic duology. Consideration of works from across her oeuvre shows how Octavia Butler created space for diverse voices in science fiction and inspired a generation of writers known as Octavia’s brood.
