These five short ‘hidden’ stories are set in the imaginary town of Hopston. They reflect what women and children experience in some cultures, even today, because they are viewed as chattel by their families. They reflect the experiences of many women and children in these backward societies. Sadly, this situation applies to the entire society in those cultures, regardless of the family’s level of education, sophistication, or prosperity. These stories are not told in public, but are whispered about in low gossipy voices. All of the participants, the oppressors as well as the victims, are ashamed of these stories, even as they continue to abide by these medieval strictures. For this reason, they are presented as fiction and the author has used a pseudonym to protect all concerned from being shamed or ostracized.
“...These stories provide a sampling of the myriad ways women in such circumstances have found to develop the resiliency and exercise the resourcefulness they need to live their lives as well as they can, as well as the impossibility for many of escaping their fate...” —Janet Hulstrand, Writing from the Heart, Reading for the Road
“Sense the Vibration: Hidden Stories is a thought-provoking, nuanced collection of stories which opens up interesting avenues for discussion of women’s places in a conservative, radically patriarchal society...” —Monika and Natasha Samtani, Co-Founders ,The Fem Word —Emily Montague, Editor, The Fem Word
