Route 3, Box 477 by Juanita D. Adams

The author is one of many ordinary girls of all races and ethnicities who come to Washington, DC, to fill the offices of the federal government.  Largely unsung and unrecognized, they keep the engine running and are the threads that help hold the fabric of this country together. She recounts her journey from the dilapidated house and impoverished neighborhood in which she grew up, her family’s struggle to survive, and her subsequent pilgrimage from her hometown of Suffolk, Virginia, to the nation’s capital.  She reveals a fallible woman who missed opportunities and who didn’t always make the right choices.  But she also presents an image of one with the will to survive--a woman with courage to follow dreams and not give up on them.
