HallowReads: Craig Johnson

All through October, we’ll be sharing spooky reading recommendations from authors and staff. Whether it’s a horrifying contemporary work or a tell-tale classic, these selections are sure to haunt you for years to come. We spoke with Craig Johnson, author of the Longmire Series, the basis for the hit A&E series, Longmire. Johnson shared with us his favorite HallowRead. Johnson joins us October 23 to present his newest Longmire Story, Wait for Signs.

It’s hard for an ol’ cowboy to get past The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, but this might suit you better…

Involved in the restoration of an old roadhouse theatre in Sheridan, Wyoming, I once took up the responsibility of adapting great works of literature for theatrical use. On the educational side, I was charged with going to the public schools and discussing the books with the students so that they could then go see the stage performance and perhaps get more out of the production.

One year the board decided to do Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus. I think one of the most transcendental moments in my writing career was at The Wyoming Girl’s School, a home for court-ordered delinquents. Imagine discussing the story of the ultimate social outsider authored by a seventeen-year-old girl… They had the book down cold; even at their tender age, they’d lived it.
