“You cannot write for children They're much too complicated. You can only write books that are of interest to them.” - Maurice Sendak

This five-week workshop is designed for those interested in learning to write picture books for young children. We will examine structure, character, voice and plot as we delve into this special form of children’s literature. Fiction, narrative non-fiction and poetry genres will be discussed along with the collusive element inherent in all picture books. Each class will consist of writing exercises, analyzing exemplary texts and writing workshops where students will have an opportunity to share their work with the group and receive constructive feedback from the class and instructor.

Please bring a notebook, writing utensils, and a small pad of sticky notes. Participants are also encouraged to bring a short list of their favorite picture books to share for the first class.

Lori Steel received her MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts where she also received the Picture Book Certificate. She is an experienced educator and library specialist. Lori resides in Kensington where she is currently revising a middle grade novel and a collection of poetry for children.
