The Invisibility Cloak - Ge Fei
This short comic novel by celebrated Chinese author Ge Fei introduces us to an audiologist named Cui, one of a dying breed of specialist installers of top-notch audio equipment. We also meet Beijing through his eyes and his interactions with its richest citizens for whom he installs top of the line speakers, only to have them choose the most generic pop records. Cui recalls a former time in China when classical music ruled the airwaves and he could make a living as an audiophile, instead of living job to job in his sisters' crumbling apartment. Through his eyes we encounter the moral and artistic contradictions of wealth and taste, the fragmentation of society in a country of deep economic insecurity, and the separate moral sphere of cultivated artistic taste.
