Exit West - Mohsin Hamid

Staff Pick

Recounting events “back then,” when “the news … was full of war, and migrants, and nativists,” Hamid’s powerful fourth novel uses the compression and spare language of allegory to deliver an urgent message about today. A dual narrative full of dualisms, the story follows Nadia and Saeed from their unnamed South Asian nation to Greece, where a resort lies alongside a refugee camp, then to London, where uneven power outages give the city “dark” and “light” sides, and on to California, another territory of both treachery and hope. While the world is in such turmoil that special doors magically appear, whisking people from one place to another, Hamid’s protagonists find as much empathy as they do hostility, and the moments of kindness ultimately keep the looming “apocalyptic change” at bay.
