Self-Publishing and Book Printing

Books published with Opus

Opus is Politics & Prose’s book making machine, formally called the Espresso Book Machine. Opus can print, bind, and trim a paperback book that looks and feels like your favorite paperback in five to ten minutes depending on its length. With Opus, in addition to printing select books from major publishers and public domain books sourced and scanned by Google, we can help you self-publish your novel, memoir, book of poetry, play, biography, thesis or any other literary endeavor. The technology is ideal for self-publishing, since it also allows authors to customize a 4-color cover and the black-and-white interior of the book, make tweaks to both, and order copies as they see fit.

If you’re interested in self-publishing your project on Opus, please take a look at our publishing packages below, which represent a wide variety of publishing and printing needs. Click on each icon for more information about the package. If you need help deciding which package is the best fit for your project or are ready to move forward with publishing, please don’t hesitate to call or write our publishing professionals. Our dedicated publishing department is right inside the store, available to help you face-to-face and guide you through the process: opus@politics-prose.com, (202) 349-1182. Regular operating hours are between 9:30 AM and 5:30 PM Tuesdays through Saturdays.

*Please note that printing costs are separate from the publishing fees.

*We cannot print color interiors, but are able to print any trim size smaller than 8.25 x 10.5" and larger than 4.5 x 6.5". Typical sizes include 5.5 x 8.5", 5.25 x 8", 6 x 9" and others. Measure any one of your favorite paperbacks and we can probably print your book that size. We can print anywhere between 40 and 800 pages, but no smaller and no longer.

*A la carte editing services are available upon request. If you’d like someone to do an in-depth edit of your book, please contact one of our publishing professionals for a quote: opus@politics-prose.com, (202) 349-1182. Please note that these services are per hour and are separate from our publishing packages.

Printing Costs

Print costs for self-published books are separate from publishing costs and based on page count. Each book costs $7, plus $0.03 per page. As an example, a 200 page book is $13, because $7 + (.03 X 200) = $13. Enter the current page count of your book here to see the price of your book.

For those buying lots of copies, we offer bulk discounts: 50 copies (10%), 100 copies (15%), and 200 copies (20%).

Testimonials

We highly recommend the Politics & Prose OPUS service. We used it to print a book of a science-fiction story that our son wrote.  The Politics & Prose staff were extremely helpful, attentive, knowledgeable and professional. They clearly explained what they could do, what the options were, and what information they needed from us. They showed initiative and creativity in designing the book cover and were responsive to our requests in modifying some details. They finished the work in good time, and we were delighted with the results.

- Larry and Sue Bruser

Opus is a wonderful little press. I'd spent a lifetime researching family history, writing a narrative from the 1280s to the present. The elegant, blue-cover, 500-page paperback Opus Press produced was the perfect legacy. One day, a great-grandchild who never met me will find it and discover a past that otherwise would be lost. If you get tired of chasing after all those pesky details, the dedicated staff will work with you until it's done.
