Pick a pattern that seems a little too difficult to execute: that lacy summer shawl, your first Fair Isle hat, or if you’re a beginner, a simple knit-and-purl scarf. Start and finish it in a month with the help of the group. Can’t read a chart? You’ll learn. Never heard of provisional cast-on? Can’t cast on at all? We’ll teach and encourage each other, and at the end of four weeks you’ll have something beautiful.

To encourage us in our efforts, we’ll read The Scarlet Letter, the story of a woman who not only met her challenges but embroidered them with golden thread. As relevant today as it was in Nathanial Hawthorne’s time, The Scarlet Letter is a feminist tract and a romance novel all in one.

Linda Greider has written about knitting and many other subjects for Washingtonian Magazine, The Washington Post and AARP. She knits everywhere she goes, but she lives in Washington DC.
