Humanoids is about to E.X.P.L.O.D.E.

This month is dedicated to Humanoids publishing in the graphic novel section of Politics & Prose. Humanoids is the premiere publisher of science fiction in Europe and was founded in 1974 by  Mœbius, Jean-Pierre Dionnet, Philippe Druillet and Bernard Farkas. Back in 2000 DC comics made an effort to bring their titles to the English speaking market however the effort was short lived. This was mostly due to terrible recoloring of some of their greatest titles and book sellers conflicts with over-sized formatting. Luckily last year Humanoids made a triumphant return to the US and gained back all of the publishing rights from DC comics.  We have made plenty of room here at P & P for these amazing graphic novels and have a huge selection of their titles for you to choose from -

Deicide by Das Pastoras & Carlos Portela - This story follows the adventures of one tribe's best young warrior, Agon, who undertakes a spiritual vision quest in order to prepare himself to hunt a monstrous beast that will provide food for the village.  However, while he is away, the warrior's lover is sacrificed by her father, the chief of the village.  Agon renounces his faith in their god and leaves the tribe, seeking a way to resurrect his beloved. Even in the highly refined arena of European comics, Das Pastoras's vibrant artwork is in a league of its own. - Frans

The Hollow Grounds by Luc & Francois Schuiten - The stories in Hollow Grounds are a breathtaking compilation of beautiful artwork and sophisticated writing, where the product of both, from the intricately designed and nuanced landscapes, to the perfectly structured plots, form a unified and wholly accessible work of art. Highly, highly recommended.  - Adam

The Metabarons, Volumes 1-4 by Alexandro Jodorowsky & Juan Gimenez - The saga of the Metabarons follows the dynasty of the Metabaron, a title conferred upon the universe's mightiest warrior. These volumes precede the graphic novel The Incal by Moebius and Alejandro Jodorowsky, who co-created the character; Jodorowsky later beseeched revered artist Juan Giminez to join the project. For the next ten years, Giminez poured his heart and soul into the fully-painted pages that illustrate this epic tale of hyperviolent genealogical warfare. Recommended for fans of hard science fiction and Warhammer 40k. - Frans

Son of the Gun volumes 1&2 by Jodorowsky and Bess - Jodorowsky's tale of the ruthless life of Juan Solo, from his infancy in the refuse of Hualtuclo to his rise to power in violence, and finally to his fall and spiritual rebirth, is a classic tale of redemption, filled with the writer's usual use of allegory and tropes. Georges Bess' artwork is expressive and clear, in a refined yet fast paced European comic style. - Adam

Technopriests Volumes 1-3 by Jodorowsky & Beltran- The Technopriest series is another sweeping space opera from the mind of Alejandro Jodorowsky, which also ties in to The Incal. We follow the young Albino on his educational and spiritual journey to become a supreme Technopriest, and create a world in which human relationships are valued more than scientific advancements. Recommended for fans of Dune and Ender's Game. - Frans
