In 1961 the 19-year-old Rideau was convicted of murder. During his 44 years in the notoriously violent Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, he became an award-winning journalist whose work helped bring reform to Angola. His NPR reports exposed the brutality of prison life and the racism of the American penal system. Eventually, he won a new trial because of racial discrimination in the composition of the grand jury that originally indicted him. In 2005, this new jury acquitted him of murder and instead convicted him of manslaughter. This conviction carried a 21-year sentence; having served 44, he was freed on the spot.
