The first map to depict the world essentially as we know it today was the Waldseemuller Map, which dates from1507. Among its many cartographical breakthroughs, it represented the New World—labeled as America—as a separate continent, and suggested the existence of the Pacific Ocean. Lester’s narrative history chronicles how European mapmakers pieced together this new picture of the world from the earlier expeditions of Vespucci, Marco Polo, and the ancients.
