Working with former Boston Globe reporter Curtis Willkie, Oliphant, the Globe’s Pulitzer-winning Washington columnist and a regular commentator on PBS NewsHour, tracks Kennedy’s route to the White House, and shows how JFK and his ambitious, talented cohorts invented modern presidential politics. Drawing on fresh interviews as well as mining the 1,600-plus oral histories at the John F. Kennedy library, Oliphant starts with Kennedy’s failed effort to clinch the vice presidential nomination in 1956 and examines his innovative campaign strategies. These included hiring the pioneering pollster, Lou Harris; defying assumptions that a Catholic candidate was unelectable, and targeting a Catholic constituency; and using a Cold War Missile Gap and televised debates to his advantage.
