Fallon’s first book, You Know When the Men Are Gone, won the PEN Center USA Literary Award in Fiction for its vivid look at the experiences of military families in Fort Hood, Texas. The linked stories made clear the essential roles played by spouses of soldiers, a theme Fallon develops further in her eagerly awaited first novel. Set in Jordan, where Fallon has lived, the narrative follows two American women whose husbands have been deployed. Not quite friends, Cassie and Margaret have different ideas of their host country, and, it turns out, much else. When Margaret goes missing, Cassie begins to see their relationship in new and unsettling ways.
