Rich Cohen
Israel Is Real (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, $27)
In this compact, personal history, Rich Cohen (Sweet and Low) traces modern Israel from the Diaspora to a modern nation. European Jews turned to Zionism out of frustration when anti-Semitism continued to prevent them from full citizenship in European countries. Herzl’s writing and organization coincided with the rise in nationalism before and immediately following World War I, and his vision became the template for the modern nation after 1945. Cohen takes readers through the significant milestones in Israel’s development—the early settlers, the trauma of Hitler, attacks on the British, partition, War of Independence, the Six Day War, and the Yom Kippur War. He offers graceful portraits of some of the major figures, including Dyan, Rabin, Meir, and Sharon.
