Philip Baruth - Senator Leahy: A Life in Scenes — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 7:00 pm

Patrick Leahy was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1975 at the age of thirty-four. Now Vermont’s senior senator, former chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and President pro tempore emeritus, Leahy holds the record for the longest tenure of any currently serving U.S. senator. In this important political biography, Baruth, a professor of English at the University of Vermont and an award-winning commentator for Vermont Public Radio, focuses on three facets of Leahy’s public career. He explores what it has meant that Leahy is Vermont’s first and technically only Democratic senator; analyzes his criticism of George W. Bush, opposition to the Patriot Act, and his role as an anthrax target after 9/11; and details the senator’s participation in Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” Batman films, an experience which moved Leahy to support bills on copyright infringement and piracy.
