Runkle founded Mercy for Animals (MFA) in 1999, and the organization is now a leading international force in the prevention of cruelty to farmed animals. His book tells the dual stories of MFA’s growth and the nation’s shift from a network of small farms that involved almost 50% of Americans, to agro-businesses run by just 1% of the population. Runkle details the effects of this change, which have been devastating for farm animals and the natural environment. He looks back over MFA’s early grassroots initiatives to improve the treatment of factory-farm animals, recounts daring undercover missions to expose the true conditions these animals endured, and recounts efforts by MFA to negotiate with major corporations. The organization has achieved several legislative victories, and Runkle reminds all of us that we can further the MFA cause by making compassionate food choices.
