The common image of suicide bombers is one of people so committed to a cause that they’re willing to die for it. Lankford, a University of Alabama criminal justice professor, studied the lives of numerous terrorists and argues that what drove these people to kill themselves was the same sort of depression, anxiety, or sense of failure that leads to nonpolitical suicides.
