Far from being a benighted dark age, the medieval era was a time of nuanced and diverse thought, Kellogg shows. In his fourth book, the author of The Roman Search for Wisdom, The Greek Search for Wisdom, and Three Questions We Never Stop Asking surveys a wide range of literary works, including Arthurian romances, Boccaccio’s tales, Dante’s Divine Comedy, and Augustine’s Confessions. Many of these initiated new genres, and overall, Kellogg demonstrates, the period was a crucial bridge between the ancient Greeks and Romans and the imminent Renaissance.
