Politics & Prose Bookstore is honored to welcome First Lady Michelle Obama to sign her book, American Grown.

This is a book signing only.

One copy of American Grown may be signed per customer. No other books or memorabilia may be brought to the signing. A limited number of wristbands for entry to this event will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis with purchase of American Grown at this event location beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 2. Limit one wristband per customer. Customers must complete a security screening form in person. Customers may not provide security information for other participants.

When and where is this event?

The event is Tuesday, May 7, 2013.  Doors will open at 9 a.m. Politics & Prose will host the book signing.  The store is located at 5015 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008, between Fessenden Street NW and Nebraska Ave. NW. The bookstore will be closed to the general public until approximately 2 p.m. on May 7.

 

How can I attend this event?

Customers wishing to attend the signing on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, must pre-purchase (reserve) a copy of American Grown from Politics & Prose on Thursday, May 2.  Politics & Prose will keep your copy of American Grown at the store.  You will need to bring your store receipt and a valid government issued photo ID with you on Tuesday, May 7.  You will then receive a color coded wristband for entrance to the book signing. 

 

What personal identification do I need to provide to attend this event?

All customers will need to pass a standard United States Secret Service background check.  White House Staff will be present on Thursday, May 2, to collect individual security details from each customer.  You must provide your security details in person.  You will need to provide your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, city and state of residence and phone number.  A customer may not provide security details for other customers. You must present a valid government-issued photo identification (state identification card, driver’s license or passport) on Thursday, May 2 in addition to providing your security information again on Tuesday, May 7 to enter the event.  No exceptions will be allowed. 

 

Do I have to purchase a copy of American Grown in order to attend the event?

Yes, attendance at the book signing is limited to customers who pre-purchase a copy of American Grown at Politics & Prose on Thursday, May 2.

 

Can I bring other family members or friends with me to the event?

Admittance to the event on May 7 will be limited to customers whose names are on the pre-approved security list.  This means you cannot bring additional adult friends or family members to the event unless they have also provided personal identification information and reserved a copy of American Grown.  However, children under the age of 12 will be admitted to the event provided that they are accompanied by an adult who is on the pre-approved security list.  Children under age 12 who are accompanied by a qualified adult will not be required to obtain a wristband or to present personal identification to be admitted to the event.

 

What time do I need to arrive at Politics & Prose on May 7 to be admitted to the event?

Please do not arrive at the store earlier than 8:30 a.m.  The airport-style security screening process will begin at approximately 9 a.m.  Please note that doors will close to attendees at 11 a.m. and no one will be admitted after that time, with no exceptions.

 

What personal items can I bring to the event?

Due to security requirements, customers are encouraged to bring as few personal items as possible.  No cameras, bags, umbrellas, liquids, sharp objects, or weapons, are permitted at the event. All customers will pass through airport style security before entering the store.  Politics & Prose is not responsible for any lost or confiscated items.  

 

Can I take a photo with the First Lady / Can I take photographs at the event?

Due to time constraints, photos with the First Lady are not possible.  Personal cameras are prohibited. 

 

Can I bring a gift or letter for the First Lady or another member of the First Family?

Due to security, neither the First Lady nor any White House Staff will be allowed to accept letters, notecards, gifts or other items.  

 

Will the First Lady personalize books at the event?

Due to time constraints, books may not be personalized.

 

Will the First Lady sign more than one copy of her book for me?

In order to ensure that each customer who attends the event has the opportunity to have a copy of American Grown signed by the First Lady, she will only be able to sign one book per customer.  

 

Will the First Lady be able to sign other items besides copies of her book American Grown?

Only copies of American Grown will be signed; no other items including memorabilia will be signed.

 

If I attend the event, is it guaranteed that the First Lady will sign my copy of her book?

We anticipate but cannot guarantee each customer who receives a wristband will receive a signed copy of American Grown.

 

Where can I park?

The parking lot at the rear of Politics & Prose will be closed to the public on Tuesday, May 7.  Street parking in the surrounding neighborhood may be available.

 

What is the closest public transportation?

We encourage customers to make use of public transportation.  Via Metro, you may take the Red Line to Van Ness.  We are one mile north on Connecticut (a 15 minute walk). You can also take the L1 or L2 metro bus from the Van Ness Metro Station.
