Mary Gaitskill - Somebody with a Little Hammer: Essays
Gaitskill is the author of six books of fiction, most recently the novel The Mare. Her work has been distinctive for its bold exploration of women’s experiences with addiction, prostitution, and sadomasochism. Her writing career has also been notable for her prolific output of cultural commentary and personal essays. The reflections and reviews gathered here are drawn from throughout the last twenty years and they highlight Gaitskill’s engagement with music, film, and literary works ranging from the Biblical Book of Revelation to Chekhov’s “Gooseberries” to Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl. They also present her trenchant thoughts on “difficult women” such as Linda Lovelace and Elizabeth Wurtzel, and explore the ways race and power can dramatically affect even the simplest, most innocent relationships.
