One of the episodes Rediker covered in his detailed The Slave Ship: A Human History was the 1839 revolt of slaves being transported from Cuba aboard the Amistad. Here he looks more closely at these fifty-three Africans, chronicling events from their perspective as well as placing their uprising within the larger historical picture of abolition and civil rights.
