Bored? Think twice before you pull out your phone. In 2015, Zomorodi guided the audience of her “Note to Self” podcast through a weeklong exercise designed to show them how to find new sources of creativity. The experiment required people to rethink how they use technology, especially if they were checking email or Facebook in order to relieve boredom. It was exactly that boredom—that unfocused time—Zomorodi explained, that was vital to nurturing original ideas. This connection between zoning out and the eureka moment recurs in Zomorodi’s interviews with scientists and artists, as well as in the experiences of ordinary people who have turned monotonous or repetitive tasks into an opportunity to develop their own exercises in creative thinking.
