Schuster’s dynamic memoir starts with her restless early years in Detroit, a city she soon left to discover the world. And discover it she did. Starting her career with The Wall Street Journal, she soon became the paper’s Latin America correspondent and then its Mexico bureau chief, reporting from the turbulent region throughout the 1980s. This was followed by a transfer to Beirut, before she returned to South America to cover the trials of the accused in Argentina’s “Dirty War.” Her role changed when she married a diplomat and moved with him to Malawi, and the second part of her book is rich with details about the little-known “Ambassatrix School,” where diplomats’ spouses are tutored in protocol and learn the roles of couture clothing, baronial mansions, and elegant parties in the lives of State Department officials.
