Jim Thorpe (1888-1953) won the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Olympics, but was stripped of his medals for having violated the amateur athletic code. He went on to play professional baseball and football, advocated on behalf of Native Americans, lectured, joined the merchant marine, and acted in films. But he also abused alcohol and had three failed marriages. Buford’s biography rounds out the legend of this complex man.
