Julie Lythcott-Haims - Real American: A Memoir

Upcoming Event
Sunday, October 22, 2017 at 5:00 pm

In her first book, How to Raise an Adult, Lythcott-Haims laid out the consequences of helicopter parenting and proposed an alternative model for bringing up children to be confident and self-sufficient. Her second book looks back over her own life, recounting the challenges she faced growing up as the biracial daughter of an African-American father and a white British mother. Speaking forcefully and directly, Lythcott-Haims, who for ten years served as Stanford’s Dean of Freshman and Undergraduate Advising, shows how profound and lasting the effects of racism are. She charts the toll bias and assumptions have taken on her own self-esteem, and proposes ways each of us can live more generously to heal our personal wounds and create a supportive community.
