Allen is a writer and performer, and her work in both veins runs to the outright hilarious. Her essays have been widely published in journals and anthologized in Andy Borowitz’s The Fifty Funniest American Writers, In the Fullness of Time, and “Disquiet, Please!” a selection of The New Yorker’s humor. In this new collection of essays, Allen considers practical questions, such as the point of fat-free half-and-half, and recounts personal experiences, like the shock of being single after twenty-five years of marriage. She makes astute observations about Sundance and L.L. Bean and imagines Martha Stewart at a Buddhist retreat. And she assures us that the anxiety of being a houseguest never fades, nor do the arts-and-crafts projects ever get easier.
