Jennet Conant - Man of the Hour: James B. Conant, Warrior Scientist

Upcoming Event
Thursday, September 28, 2017 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Conant’s intimate and deeply researched biography of her grandfather, James B. Conant (1893-1978), reads like a summary of the nation’s major foreign policy issues from World War I through the Cold War. A chemist, Conant supervised the development of poison gas during the First World War. During the second, he advised FDR on behalf of intervention and served as administrative director of the Manhattan Project. He supported bombing Hiroshima but rejected use of the hydrogen bomb. Under Eisenhower, he served as high commissioner to Germany and became one of the architects of U.S. post-War foreign policy. Conant, who has viewed twentieth-century history through the lens of biography in The Irregulars and Tuxedo Park, looks closely at questions of war and diplomacy we still struggle to resolve.
