Sexton’s vivid account of the 2016 campaign trail takes us directly into the fray of a divided nation. Covering both Trump and Clinton, Sexton was one of the first journalists to report behind-the-scenes from a Trump rally. His depictions of the raw anger and racist taunts the GOP candidate ignited are shocking still. By contrast, Clinton’s appearances were carefully managed and failed to tap into the longing for change that Sanders had engaged, leaving his supporters frustrated and often bitter. Putting these dispatches into a wider cultural context, Sexton, an associate professor of creative writing at Georgia Southern University, examines foreshadowing events such as the rise of Fox News and the shooting in Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Reporting from the U.S., Europe, and South Africa, Polakow-Suransky, an Open Society Foundation fellow and former op-ed editor at The New York Times, explores today’s political polarization as a global phenomenon. Drawing on his close experience with international political figures like Geert Wilders and Marine Le Pen, Polakow-Suransky looks carefully at the reasons for the rise of demagoguery on one side and resistance on the other. His wide-ranging and thought-provoking investigation analyzes the recent waves of populism, xenophobia, and nationalism with an eye not only to their immediate effects, but also their long-term consequences for democracy.
