Following the Vietnam War, a divisive argument raged from roughly 1979 to 1984 over how to memorialize the conflict and honor those who served. In this detailed account of that “art war,” Reston, a historian, journalist, and playwright who served in the U.S. Army as an intelligence officer from 1965 to 1968, describes what was at stake for the different parties involved. Covering both the politics and the aesthetics of the issue, Reston shows how complicated the matter was even before Maya Lin’s winning design generated fresh controversies. He replays the debates from the perspectives of politicians, their constituents, veterans, and veterans’ families, and follows the story through to the addition of Frederick Hart’s The Three Servicemen in 1984 and Glenna Goodacre’s Vietnam Women’s Memorial, dedicated on November 11, 1993.
