Shea is one of some 30 million partially deaf people in the United States. His hearing was damaged by scarlet fever when he was six, but his condition wasn’t diagnosed until thirty years later. In the meantime, Shea graduated from Yale and Columbia, practiced law in New York and Paris, and developed various strategies for understanding what he couldn’t entirely hear. His memoir recounts his ingenious compensating skills and the stress of his long struggle.
