One of the nation’s foremost journalists has collected his essays, from The New Yorker and other publications, to retrace the previous decade. He starts with September 11, surveying the world and America as it moves aggressively into the Middle East. The second section reports on “Trouble Spots.” Section III is a series of essays on writers, and the articles in Section IV, “The End of an Era,” are about the change in this country’s direction in 2008. In his introduction, Packer points to the importance of those seven years (2001 through the end of 2008), noting that “following an earlier time of domestic tranquility and triviality, [they] were crowded with drama: wars, suicide bombings, secret prisons, partisan combat, wild gyrations in the stock market, economic collapse, the disappearance of entire industries, political transformation.”
