Geoffrey Cowan - Let the People Rule: Theodore Roosevelt and the Birth of the Presidential Primary

Cowan is the author of The People v. Clarence Darrow, president of the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands, and closely involved with the Democratic Party’s post-1968 decision to hold more presidential primaries. He takes the title for his new book from Teddy Roosevelt’s 1912 rallying cry. Out of retirement and challenging Taft—his hand-picked successor—for the Republican nomination for president, Roosevelt promoted primaries as a way to gain the popular vote. He won the votes, but couldn’t circumvent the party system, and Cowan’s story is as lively as its principal player, and as timely as the political season.
