Henderson’s vivid look at 1980s New York City, Ten Thousand Saints, was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Award for First Fiction. Her second novel combines an intimate family drama with the social tensions of Cotton County, Georgia, in the 1930s. Henderson, an associate professor at Ithaca College, skillfully interweaves details of the Jim Crow South and the Great Depression to tell the story of Elma Jesup, a white sharecropper’s daughter. When she gives birth to a dark-skinned child, her family leaps to the conclusion that she was raped and lynch the man they presume is guilty. The repercussions are shattering, and Henderson delves into a legacy of violence and secrecy that extends beyond one family or one county.
