Wlliams’s debut novel unfolds in the wake of massive solar flares that virtually destroyed electricity and everything that depends on it. While most of modern civilization is in chaos, Amish communities are relatively stable. But as the increasingly desperate “English”—non-Amish—mobs flee the ruined cities, they stop asking the Amish for help and just take what they need. Williams tells this post-apocalyptic story from the point of view of an Amish husband and father, and Jacob’s journal is a compelling account of an unimaginable situation as well as an urgent meditation on how a man devoted to peace can defend his family and stay true to his principles in an increasingly violent situation.
