The Green family, billionaire owners of Hobby Lobby craft stores, gained national attention in 2014 when their religious objections to provisions in the Affordable Health Care Act led to a successful suit against the federal government. Evangelicals, the Greens are dedicated to increasing the Bible’s influence in American society, a mission which includes working to place a Bible curriculum in schools and opening a 430,000-square-foot Museum of the Bible three blocks from the Capitol. In their detailed account, Moss, a professor of New Testament at the University of Birmingham (UK) and author of The Myth of Persecution, and Baden, professor of Hebrew Bible at the Yale Divinity School and author of The Historical David, show that the project raises a host of troubling questions, from the provenance of the Greens’ 40,000 biblical artifacts to the ethics of promoting private faith in the public sphere.
