Exploring ideas of identity by focusing on passing, these fifteen essays by writers including Margo Jefferson, Trey Ellis, MG Lord, Achy Obejas, and Clarence Page examine a range of personal, cultural, and political reasons that compel people to pretend to be other than who they are. Skyhorse, author of The Madonnas of Echo Park and Take This Man, was raised as a Native American though his parents were Mexican Americans. Page, a writer and professor of creative writing and English at George Washington University, watched her mother pass as a white woman without biracial children. While passing is most often associated with race, several contributors recount experiences of hiding sexual orientation or gender, while for others the passing was unintentional, the result of others’ assumptions.
