Caesar conquered Celtic Gaul sometime around 50 BCE, and as the Celts abandoned their ancient tribal ways and adopted Roman values, the foundation was laid for modern Europe. Omrani, author of Asia Overland, is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Royal Geographical Society. He’s organized his book as a kind of atlas; as he tours Roman Gaul’s archeological sites, amphitheaters, and battlefields, he explores not only the lasting physical effects of Caesar’s conquest, but its influence on French language, laws, religion, architecture, government, and industry.
