Barbara Kingsolver - The Lacuna @ Wesley United Methodist Church
Nov 6 2009 7:00 pm
Nov 6 2009 8:00 pm
In this entertaining historical novel, Kingsolver shifts to new territory. Her protagonist is Harrison Shepherd, a gay, half-Mexican/half-American autodidact with remarkable powers of observation which he turns to writing about himself. Shepherd served as secretary and cook to Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and Leon Trotsky, whom the artists were helping to protect when he fled from Stalin. (Mexico had agreed to receive Trotsky as a refugee.) After Trotsky’s assassination, Shepherd moved to Asheville, North Carolina, and wrote novels during and following World War II. Shepherd observes America turning inward with fear throughout the late ’40s, a period Kingsolver plainly thinks parallels this past decade.
