Alexandra Horowitz - Being a Dog: Following the Dog Into a World of Smell

Upcoming Event
Thursday, October 27, 2016 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

For a dog, the air he breathes is his richest source of information; smells orient him to where he is, alert him to what’s nearby, and help him keep track of who’s just passed. In her second book, Horowitz, a Barnard College teacher of psychology and animal behavior, and the author of Inside a Dog, draws on her research in canine cognition to give as vivid a sense of the dog’s experience of the world as we’re likely to get with our distinctly weaker noses. Horowitz studies her own dogs’ behavior while on walks, lays out the physiology of a dog’s nose, and interviews experts on the olfactory range of different animals, including humans.
