In what is sure to become a much-talked-about book, The New Yorker writer traces “the rise and fall of free market ideology,” producing a combination of history of ideas, narrative of the financial crisis, and a call to arms. This detailed analysis of what went wrong in the last decade points back to the Reagan era, when an understandable respect for free-market forces was frozen into a rigid posture that rejected all regulation. Cassidy calls for restoring the balance between public intervention and private initiative and makes a number of recommendations about how to achieve it.
