Stephen Cohen, director of the Institute for Middle East Peace and Development, has written a comprehensive account of American Middle East diplomacy since the end of World War I. The product of forty years of work and study in the region, this volume begins with the idealism of Woodrow Wilson—which Cohen sees as the source of a confused legacy that plagues U.S. efforts in the region to this day—and moves through Egypt’s nationalism, British imperialism in Iran, and on to America’s alliance with the Saudis, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Cohen argues that a “one-size-fits-all” diplomacy will not work.
